several tracts of land (near now, Gallatin) but discovered that under
the law he was entitled to only one tract. He laid claim to 800a that
became "Spencers Choice" After SPENCER was killed by the Indians in
the spring of 1794, Col David SHELBY bought this land & in 1798 built a
gray stone residence. The walls are 2 feet thick, the doorways &
windows are set deep in paneled embrasures, & the original paneling,
wainscoting, & mantels are preserved. After Co SHELBY's death, the
house was bought by Gen Joseph MILLER....The earthquake of 1812 cracked
on of the walls of the house, & the out-buildings were destroyed during

rectors left any records. the earliest found was in 1839, so of course
there was no record of Susannah (HART) SHELBY's death or funeral Jul

CKS-H.E. DIBRELL, Deputy Co Clerk, Guadalupe Co, TX- 5 Sept 1942: A
careful search of the index fails to reveal that the estate of Evan
SHELBY filed a will in this county. However, an abstract company here
did find a Bill of sale. [Donegan Abstract Co] Our county was organized
in 1846 from parts of Bexar & Gonzales counties. Evan served in the
War of 1812 They had 11 ch CKS gives Evan's death as 19 Apr 1884, 3
months short of his 98th birthday. His Bible rec stated he was aged 88
yrs & 9 months at time of death.

Conti of LA, CA 1994. I can now understand why the conflicting data-The
rec's are extremely difficult to read- the handwriting is very small &
not very legiable. But at least it does show that Evan Jr was baptised
23 Oct 1720 (not 1719) This also fits the age of 74 given on his
tombstone. Evan's will was written 21 Feb 1778, the year after Evan's
wife died. This will was not found & probated until 1798. Evan may
have died suddenly, as although he married again & had 3 additional
children, there was no 2nd will or codicil to the first one. THE SHELBY
FAMILY PAPERS, given to the Lib of Congress in Washington DC, by a
desc, Mrs Susan Grigsby in 1915, have been microfilmed on 3 reels-
copies of which I now have-obtained from the TN State Archives. The
early DAR rec's for the SHELBYs & related families are in deplorable
shape as far as reliability is concerned & some of these rec's are
finally being closed. HISTORIC SITES OF SULLIVAN CO, publ 1976 There
were, originally, 1946a in the Sapling Grove tract when it was surveyed
& sold in 1749 to James PATTEN(sic) for $50. Abt 1768 Gen Evan SHELBY &
Isaac BAKER bought this tract for 304lbs each & split the land-each
taking 973a. All this land at the time was supposed to be in VA but,
when the line was finally settled, SHELBYs land became the site of
Bristol TN & BAKERs share, part of modern Bristol, VA. Parents: Evan SHELBY Sr and Catherine MORGAN.

He was married to Isabella ELLIOT(T) about 1796 in "Sapling Grove", Sullivan Co, TN. The Shelby sons strongly opposed the romance-they considered Isabella a
golddigger-as she required Evan to deed a third of his estate to her
before she would accept his proposal. To help keep the peace, they
apparently named their first child, a son, after Evan's son James that
had been killed by Indians. Their 2 dau's also carry the Shelby names.
Isaac was his father's exec & stated the following: "I have no farther
demands against said Isabella on account of the said estate, nor has she
any farther claim against sd estate either for dower or otherwise-and
further it is a primary object in the settlement which I have made with
sd Isabella that Aledander DROMGOOLE is on no pretense whatever to set
his foot on the Sapling Grove Plantation belonging to me." Children were: James SHELBY, Letitia SHELBY , Eleanor SHELBY.
