bulletThomas Andrew 'Tom' SMITH was born about 1885 in , , SC. He died in Jan 1946 in Cherryville, Cleveland Co, NC. Rae Ellen gave the information on her family, but off the top of her
head, could not remember the birth dates, etc for her brothers and
sisters.
Almost nothing is known or remembered about her father they all called
'Tom'. He died of skin cancer at the age of 51. He did not have a birth
certificate.
Tom was a farmer and sharecropper and apparently didn't talk much
about his childhood or parents. The only thing Rae Ellen could recall,
was that she was named for his mother, Mary Ellen.
There was mention that a Burpe(??) SMITH came to live with them. That
he was a cousin to Tom and they had some kind of a falling out. There
were also hints made by his sister-in-law, Colene, that he was married
and had a family living in Cheseny(?) SC-but nothing has ever been
proven. That he was of German and Dutch descent.
They moved around a lot, although usually not too far in any one
direction, and never owned any land. Although money was scarce, hunger
was never a problem as they raised their own pigs, poultry, meat, made
their own butter, cream and lard; and canned from what they raised in
their garden.

He was married to Bertha Elizabeth HUFFMAN on 21 May 1929 in Hilderbran, Burke Co, NC. Children were: Rae Ellen SMITH, Dorothy Pearl SMITH, Thomas Jr SMITH, Franklin Delano SMITH, James Daniel SMITH, Virginia Laura SMITH, Howard Earl SMITH `, Mattie Ann SMITH, Oscar SMITH, William 'Bill' SMITH.
