Isaac's dau has the family record...My bro, Richard Pindell SHELBY marr
the dau of John L HICKMAN of Paris KY., who died young, leaving him
with one child, who was accidentally killed by the discharge of a
pistol..... The daughters of my late husband, Samuel MAGOFFIN, whose
1st wife Susan SHELBY, dau of my father's brother Isaac, are residing
in this place, one a widow with 1 child, the other Susan Shelby
MAGOFFIN, living with me. I was born in the year 1813, just before our
grandfather was called to head of his troops, sent to meet the British
on the Lakes. My father had a comand under him and was taken prisoner,
but afterwards exchanged. Your old cousin is about to finish her
eightieth year. My father's oldest sister Sarah McDOWELL was the wife
of Dr ephraim McDOWELL, the greatest benefactor the female sex has ever
known & has a reputation wherever the science of medicine is known,
having first operated for the relief of ovarian tumors.... CKS adds
the following-Susan was the oldest dau of James & Mary (PINDELL) SHELBY
& grdau of Isaac SHELBY & Susnnah HART. With her letter were these
notes: Susan SHELBY, aged 79, m 1st-Col CARTER of Carter Co KY who
died of cholera in '49; m. 2nd Samuel MAGOFFIN, who with his bro. James
were largely instrumental in making our conflict with Mexico a
bloodless war. My bro. Isaac SHELBY would be 75. He marr Sarah McCLURE,
dau of Andrew McCLURE, merchant of Lexington. Their dau Sarah marr
Edmund KINKEAD & has 2 children, the son being the living image of Gov
SHELBY, since he is descended from him on both sides. My brother James
SHELBY died unmarr at 35; brother Kosiusko died in infancy; brother
Lafayette was unm. He was killed; brother Evan died abt 35 yrs of age.
[Note of interest-In the fall of 1844, the above mentioned Lafayette was
placed on trial for the murder of Henry M HOVINE-The newspapers of the
day, of course, covered the trial-The Hon Henry CLAY was the lawyer for
the defense. Lafayette didn't get along with his father for the yr or 2
before this all happened & during this that time he had stayed at
Lexington boarding at the taverns. Lafayette didn't like the way HOVINE
was looking at him, there was a fight, SHELBY thought the guy had a gun,
so SHELBY managed to shoot first, killing HOVINE. SHELBY was aquitted
on self defense-but left the area after the trial- From what I gather
from bits & pieces, Lafayette never made contact with his family again.
FCL, Louisville-Mss Dept- D.M GRIFFITH, a friend of SHELBY, was
attending Centre College in Danville. His Journal (diary) in part, has
been typed, & a copy is in the lib-I can't copy from it, as I would
first have to obtain permission from the Lib. But He gives some detail
of what he remembers from attending this trial, which took place in Aug

Co TX. 1866 to Tampico where my wife died. We have 3 children, the 2 a
boy & a girl died in infancy. the 3rd, Nannie Warren READ, is still
living with me. she was born Henderson KY 4 Jul 1843. In 1871 we left
Mexico & returned to the US & settled in AR. In 1874 Nannie married a
SMITH. He died & we moved back to KY in Henderson. 1881 we got back to
TX & now living in Austin. Nannie has a son b 21 Jun 1875, named Robert
H SMITH. I was born 7 Mar 1813. My father was Col Thomas READ of
Charlotte Co VA. My mother was Betsey SIMS. I was b Ash Camp, Charlotte
Co VA.
