Notes" Jacob Henry Trolinger, born in 1718 in Germany, came with
father to Pennsylvania in 1738 and thence to the vicinity of Haw River,
North Carolina (Orange County), in 1745. He married Barbara ....... .
Early records show that 18 August 1759 a grant of 160 acres of land on
the west side of Haw River was issued to him. Shortly before the
Revolutionary War he bought a large tract of land in Montgomery County,
Virginia (near the town of Dublin which is now a part of Pulaski County),
and moved there. On the property was a salt petre cave, from which he
and his sons mined salt petre and made it into gun powder for the
American Army. During the latter part of the war he moved back to North
Carolina. While living there in 1781, Cornwallis' army came through Haw
River and on foraging expeditions carried away what grain and flour he
had in his mill and granaries. This action he resented and promptly told
Cornwallis what he thought of him; whereupon the British Commander
ordered him tied up to a tree with a bridle bit in his mouth. The
british went away and that afternoon he was found by a Mrs. Rippy who
loosened him. He died near Haw river in August of 1788 (previously
mentioned as 1708). Parents: Adam DROLLINGER and Margareta Valencia BECK.

bullet John TROLINGER was born in 1771 in Haw River, Orange Co, NC. He owned 50a. on the waters of New River adjoining Henry Piper, Christopher Trinkle on 18 Feb 1807 in Montgomery County.(28) Dublin Depot by: Dr. H. Jackson

The earliest settlement at Dublin occurred in 1776 when Henry Jacob Trollinger and his family erected a cabin just behind the house on old Route 11, now owned by Dr. and Mrs. W.J. Walker. The next resident was a cabin built near the present fire house in 1810 by Sarah Trollinger and her husband, Stephen Trinkle. At that time "the forest around their home was unbroken and brush was so close that man on horseback could not have been
seen 20 yards from the cabin. "Wolves and panthers howled and screamed around the Trinkle house. As late as 1850 "more than half of the county around Dublin was in the woods."

What is now Dublin would probably still be in woods, crops and pasture had it not been for the depot being located here in 1854. John Trollinger and Steven Trinkle, brothers-in-law, gave three acres of land in 1854 and construction immediately began on a depot, round house, turn-table, wood house, switches and a well.

Passenger service began June 29, 1854 and freight began to be handled on July 24, 1854.

Anti-British settlement had resulted from the King’s attempt to give the land back to the Indians in 1763. Many of the region settlers took up arms for independence in 1776. Trollinger Cave just north of the present corporate limits of Dublin supplied saltpeter and gunpowder for the Patriots, a contribution it was a repeat in the next century for confederate soldiers.

He owned 30a. on Peek Creek a branch of New River on 20 Jan 1823 in Montgomery County, VA.(29) He was buried in 1840 in Trollinger Cem, Near Dublin, VA. He died on 11 Oct 1840 in Near Dublin, Montgomery Co, VA. John's will was probated 5 Nov 1840 in Mont Co, Will Bk I p1. Bur
Trollinger (now Dublin) Cem. He was in the manufacturing business
(learned from his father) and sale of saltpetre and gunpowder; was a
Presbyterian; served as a private in the War of 1812 in Capt William
Currin's Company of Infantry, Seventy-fifth Regiment of Virginia
Militia from Montgomery Co. [Rec's in the National Archives, Wash DC]
John and Elizabeth settled at the old TROLLINGER place on the property
of his father Henry Jacob, near Dublin, and eventually added to this
and accumulated approximately 2000a between the present towns of
Dublin and Newbern. John built the "old mansion" on this farm, only a
few feet from his father's original dwelling. He died 1840 and was
buried in the (now) Dublin Cem on a hill opposite the old mansion.

Notes:
As a Presbyterian, he took a prominent part in the reorganization and
rebuilding of the New Dublin Presbyterian Church in 1833. He built the
old Trolinger place, an old long log house, with each room opening on the
outside. It was located just east of the town of Dublin, and was rebuilt
in 1886.

He owned several thousand acres east of Dublin. The property included
the Coffee Pot Farm, the "Old Trolinger Place," and the Elliott Place.

On 11 October 1840 he died at the "Old Trolinger Place," and was buried
in the Trolinger (now Dublin) Cemetery. His wife survived him until 12
October 1869.

His will was made 28 September 1832 and probated 5 November 1840
(Montgomery County Will Book 1, p 1).

Submitted to the Grayson Co TX Book Committee May 1978, for the Grayson Co history book.
My great great grandfather, Dr William Henry Trolinger was born Aug 11, 1827 in Pulaski Co VA, the oldest of 4 children. With their parents, Henry and Attilla (Cecil) Trolinger, they moved to Henry Co MO in 1832, where William received his medical training. He married there Jan 22, 1850, Mary Jane Thompson, widow of James Montgomery. Will and Mary had 6 children, Henry Judson, (my great grandfather), Eliza, Cora Campbell, Lilla Buchanan, Fannie and Harry. Only Henry, Cora and Lilla lived to maturity and all graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX where their father was a Trustee. The Civil War drove Dr and Mrs Trolinger from MO to find a place of safety in Whitesboro which was already a log cabin village, when, in 1861 they arrived with their family and slaves. Dr Trolinger assisted with the first survey of the original townsite in 1869 and helped those who started the little town, sometimes called Whites Colony. The first frame home was built by Dr Huff, on N. Union Street. The Trolinger home was the second frame home to be built in Whitesboro after the Civil War in 1865. All the lumber was hauled in ox-wagons from Jefferson, TX. This being over 300 miles, it took well over a year to complete and was considered the one tru Greek (colonal) house in the area, where it stood the weather of time until torn down in the early 1960's. Although first and foremost a Dr, William was elected to the Texas House of Representives in 1873 and later to the Senate, at which time he had much to do with bringing the railroads to Whitesboro. after retiring, he devoted his time to the building up of his town. Schools, churches, railroads, banks, all struggled to existance aided by his personal contribution and wise counsel. Dr and Mrs Trolinger were members of the 1st Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, and she, as a Sunday school teacher. Dr Trolinger after a long illness, died at his home Oct 28, 1895. Along and honorable life ended and the community lost the support and influence of its life long friend. Mrs Trolinger was born in Montegrow Springs, MO. Oct 18, 1826 and died Nov 17, 1921. She, her husband and 5 children are buried in the Whitesboro Cemetery. She was a realist, and had an educated mind and much of this material was gathered from articles she had written. My great grandfather, Dr Henry J Trolinger was born in Henry Co, MO Oct 31, 1850 and died at his home in San Antonio Feb 27, 1913 and is buried at Calvert, Milam Co, TX. He was 11 years old when his parents settled in Whitesboro where he spent his youth. He graduated from Baylor, then graduated from St Louis, MO Medical School in 1875. He returned to Whitesboro before settling in San Antonio. He married his 2nd wife, Belle Savage (died 1891). They had 3 children- Estille, Bessie, and Jack, my grandfather. Grandfather Jack was born in Whitesboro, May 16, 1885, died in Mission, TX Dec 23, 1960; he was a banker. He married Florence Mildred Thompson, Sept 1905 in San Antonio. She was born in Moreland, KY, Oct 3 1885 and died in Edinburg, TX Mar 1963. They had 5 children, 4 still living- Henry, John Shelby (my father), William, Arthur and Nancy. Dad was born in San Antonio, Sept 3, 1912. My mother, Dot Blair, was born Dec 28, 1918 in Belton, Bell Co, TX. They were married in San Antonio, April 1, 1961 in California. I John Jr, was born in Austin, TX Nov 8, 1939. My education was obtained in schools all over the world, as Dad was in the Army. I married Judith Ann Presser (born Jan 24, 1942 in OK), at Portuguse Bend, California., Sept 21, 1962. Our 2 sons were born in Harbor City, LA Co, California- John David in 1863 and James Michael in 1965. Parents: Henry TROLINGER and Attilla White CECIL.
