SHELBYs we have yet to link

THIS IS A LARGE FILE, SO GIVE IT TIME TO LOAD -Click on 'EDIT' then click 'FIND IN PAGE'-type in the name you are looking for-

Have still not been able to quite put my finger on these families..  My comments, as ALWAYS, in square brackets [ ] only:

Visit Heather's LANE web site-Its impressive:  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bowers/lane/index.htm

1.  Isaac M SHELBY was born about 1817 in KY.   The 1850 Coahoma Co MS, Mortality Schedules, give Isaac's age as 33. He died in Aug 1850 in Coahoma Co, MS.

He was married to Maria J DELANY on 21 Jul 1842 in Union Co, KY.   Marriage Records for This Co. Maria J DELANY died before 1850 in prob, Coahoma Co, MS.

Isaac M died of Cholera, at the age of 33, in  Aug 1850, according to the 1850 Coahoma Co, MS, Mortality Schedules- A. Gillis, publ 1973, p47. Isaac was also Sheriff of this Co in 1840.

Isaac is County Clerk 1837 & is witness this date for Malinda (BRADBURN) SHELBY's marriage contract to her 2nd husband, Jonathan THOMAS-
BK D p3 Chancery Clerk Office, Clarksdale, Coahoma Co MS- She gives land to son's Wm B, John, Aaron I.D. SHELBY in Belville, Hopkins Co KY.

This Isaac M does not appear to be her son, although right age; or nothing to indicate he's son of Rev Aaron SHELBY, son of Wm & Sarah. This Aaron was the minister for several DELANY\DELANEY marr's during the 1820's, in Union Co, KY.

In 1855 there is an Indenture for Thomas SHELBY [son of Wm & Sarah] betw the unknown SHELBY desc's & a DELANY\DELANEY family. Still trying to sort all of this out.

William & Sarah are on the 1810 cencus Caldwell Co KY, show 6 son's- William names only 5 son's in his 1817 Will- Isaac M is not one of them. Have found nothing in the rec's to indicate Wm had a son Isaac-  So, who does Isaac M belong to??

THE SHELBY SEEKERS, Allied Families of Cannon, Clinton, Dodds, Love, Posey, and Stembridge, by Jonel Sharp Harmon and Mary Dalby Zinzilieta, publ Feb 1997, p13:
Gives more in depth study to Moses, son of Wm & Sarah- The authors feel that records indicate Moses may have married twice-
Moses m Polyxena THOMPSON, 1 Nov 1824, Union Co, KY. Ch- Letitia Susan; Amelia Catherine S; & Mary Jane SHELBY [these are documented]

Is this the same Moses?? If not, who is he??  makes no mention of his wife in his will dated 1832, probated Jan 1835 Union Co, IL- & said to be a duplicate of his will- "devises to my daughter America Aliva Delaney SHELBY, now a resident of the State of KY...my [other] 3 dau's-Katherine, Susannah, Mary Jane SHELBY.   signed by Moses.

Now, does the following fit in here somewhere????

Joseph LANE, 1st Territorial Gov of OR & his wife Polly, had a dau Mary Virgina LANE who m 3 Nov 1852 in Evansville, IN, to AARON DELANY SHELBY.
Aaron was b 7 Oct 1827 near Henderson Co, KY. Aaron died [according to Heather W BOWERS] in 1881 in Portland, Multnomah Co, OR.

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bowers/lane/51997q.htm
May 9, 1997 LANE, John
Searching for the death date and place for John LANE and his wife Elizabeth STREET. John was the son of Jesse LANE and Winifred AYCOCK, he was born in NC abt. 1768 and md. Elizabeth STREET daughter of Col. James STREET in 1798 in NC. They left NC and went to Henderson Co., KY abt. 1804. Abt 1816/17 they went to Vanderburgh Co., IN where they died. Which would have been after 1820. They had the following children: Jesse, Joseph, Anthony Floyd, Mary, Lorena, Winifred, John and Simon LANE.

May 15, 1997
 LANE, Joseph
Joesph LANE, 1st Territorial Gov of OR & his wife Polly, are said to have had a dau Mary Virginia LANE who m 3 Nov 1852 in Evansville, IN
Aaron Delany SHELBY.
Aaron was b 7 Oct 1827 near Henderson Co, KY. The SHELBYs I know (along with their connections to the HARTs) Would like to confirm Mary being the dau of Gov LANE.

Feb 2004 -Heather's home page [LANE family]
 http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bowers/lane/index.htm

Heather states she has:
"The Quiet Life of Mrs Gen Lane", by Victoria Case. This is about Polly and Gen Lane and their descendants.
Gen Joseph Lane was b on 14 Dec 1801 in Ashville, Buncombe Co, NC. He was buried in Apr 1881 in Roseburg, Doulas Co, OR. He d 19 Apr 1881 in Roseburg, Douglas Co, OR. Joseph's wife was Polly PIERCE, b 16 Mar 1802 in KY; m 23 Jun 1820 in Vanderburg Co, IN. She d 10 Aug 1870 in Roseburg; was bur in Aug 1870 in Roseburg - 11 children-one of which was MARY VIRGINA LANE.

Mary Virgina LANE, b 20 Apr 1830, Vanderburg Co, IN; d 3 Nov 1911 in OR; bur Nov 1911 in OR. Mary married Aaron SHELBY bef 1856 in IN.
Aaron was b in 1881 in OR.   Children: Eugene; Anna Blanche b 1856 in OR, d 10 Oct 1939 in OR.

[Have lost contact with her] Mrs Pat Osborn, Boise, ID 83709- Jan 1998- She was looking for James Asahel ABBOTT b 1831 in Jackson Co, IN; m Gentry Co, MO to Anna Mariah SHELBY, b 1833 Jackson Co, IN. Pat has been trying to prove a connection to Susan Amanda SHELBY, b 1831 in Monroe Co, IN.
Susan married James A FLEENOR in 1849. Both the ABBOTTs & FLEENORs took Oregon Donation land claims and records show them arriving in OR in 1853 and settling in Douglas Co, OR. Susan named a dau Anna Eugenia, and Anna named a daughter Susan.Aaron and Mary's children Annie and Eugene were b in Douglas Co, OR-
There should be a connection in here somewhere?; and could these all 'loop' back to Henderson Co, KY?? William and Sarah (NEEL) SHELBY of Henderson Co-the Aaron name passes thru their children.

MORE SHELBY MYSTERIES!!

Was going through Cass Knight SHELBYs (CKS) papers again, looking for clues on SHELBYs in Vermillion Co, Indiana-In particular a David SHELBY born 1792 somewhere in Pennsylvania. This David married Deborah HALL (b 1801 KY)      Hmmm…he's close enough in age to [maybe??] be connected to Mrs Hoberta (SHELBY) FROSTs Thomas SHELBY
b 1796 PA?????  More on this David later…
[2004-It has now been proven this David is the real  son of Joshua and Susannah SHELBY]

Instead, I found the following David SHELBY- Sure wish CKS had followed up on this one!

CKSs Miscellaneous SHELBYs:
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, will book no. 13, page 61: Exemplification. Will of David SHELBY, borough of Braddock, county of Allegheny, dated December 30, 1893.  To wife Margaret H SHELBY, lot no. 8 in plan of lots laid out near Shafton, North Huntington Township, Westmoreland County. Son David executor. Signed, David (X) SHELBY.  No. 208 of 1903
"This David SHELBY came from Glamorganshire, South Wales, to Niles, [Trumbull Co], OH in 1862 and removed to Pennsylvania later, where he died. I met his son David SHELBY at Braddock, PA, in 1926 and later on his granddaughter, Margaret DAVIES, at Wilkensburg [Allegheny Co] a music teacher in the public schools of Pittsburgh --CKS"
[This was all that was in CKSs records]

Decided to do some hunting, and came up with the following- But haven't found David SHELBY Jr -He was about 59 or 60 when Cass met him: David Sr's son Richard was older..wonder why he's not named in above will? There may be more probate records available…1910 and 1920 census also needs to be checked

BRADDOCK CEMETERY,  (also known as RUSSELL CEMETERY)
Data collected & documented by Nancy and Tom McAdams

The Braddock Cemetery or Old Braddock Cemetery is located on Locust Street in North Braddock. The cemetery was started by the Hebron Lutheran Church in East Pittsburgh about 140 years ago. Locals recognize the cemetery by the name Russell Cemetery and there are members of the Russell family buried in Braddock Cemetery. As the size of the Hebron Lutheran Church congregation dwindled, so did its ability to maintain the cemetery and its records.

There are no posted section markings. Most of the older records were lost in a fire. The cemetery and its Board of Directors are blessed to have Post 181 Monument repairs and replacement of obscure veterans markers with new bronze markers have been done often using his own contributions of time, labor and money.

MARY ANN ELIZABETH ADAMS - WHERE WAS HER HUSBAND, JAMES DEATON SHELBY??
[Editor- as always- anything in [ ] are my additions & not part of the record]
In March of this year, I came across Tissie Schwebel's home page on the Internet. What caught my eye was the tombstone that said "HELLO DEAR DESCENDANTS", with a closer look at the list, I spotted the SHELBY name. So sent off an E-mail, asking  what SHELBY she was looking for. Tissie provided what she could on her husband's family. Which wasn't much.
Tissie stated "I have had more fun getting this tombstone before I die. The whole  town of West Columbia, TX is laughing & having fun with it...
My husband thinks I'm goofy but he did go over to see it. Then there was mention of the street names in Lake Jackson (Brazoria Co) TX where her husband, Robert works- His address is on "That Way St". - Then there is "This Way St, "Any Way St" & "His Way St" - I made note of the fact that nothing was mentioned about a "Her Way St"- <grin>

Robert stated his grandmother was Dora ELLIS b 24 Oct 1887. She married Samuel Briscoe SHELBY b Oct 1856 in TN I think, d 1922 in Matagorda, TX.
He was a water well man.
Samuel B m Nancy Emeline McCOWEN b Jul 1864 in Peck, Austin Co, TX. She d 15 Aug 1949 in  Matagorda. I think Peck, TX is where Lake Travis is now.
They lived on land that was submerged when they built the dam. Samuel's father was James Deaton SHELBY b in IL...
Tissie did some more digging & provided a wife for James D- Mary Ann Elizabeth ADAMS- She in turn married a 2nd time to a Dr GEE. - She sent copies of several pages that a cousin, whose mother was Margaret SHELBY, had written in Oct of 1995, per a phone conversation with Lee SCHWEBEL, Jr.

In the pages Tissie sent, was the following information:
"...Grandma GEE-Mary Ann Elizabeth ADAMS, said to be the 1st white child born in Nachadoches Settlement [TX], dau of John ADAMS (came from MA to join his family in St Louis, MO) & Sarah WILLIAMS who settled on the Red River in TX....The SHELBY's, WILLIAMs & ADAMS had a trading post [in St Louis?]
Grandma Nancy Emeline SHELBY (nee McCOWEN) dau of Francis Marion McCOWEN.. Gr Grandma GEE's 3 ch were: Sam SHELBY; Mary(sic) SHELBY; Dr Will GEEs son. Grandpa Samuel SHELBYs father was James Deaton SHELBY, I'm sure he was named for a friend...I believe Grandpa Samuel SHELBYs father James D was a member of the family who moved to St Louis, MO from KY...

The following is what I have found so far:
Some digging produced information on Mary E-In the records of Charles E SHELBY (desc of Capt Moses SHELBY & Millie RENFRO) was a letter from Treacle (CLIFTON) EBERSOLE, of Tujunga, CA in 1972.--

James Deaton SHELBY of IL, [There were DEATONs, including a James; no SHELBYs in Morgan Co IL in 1840] went to somewhere in AR, & may have met & married Mary there, as census shows their dau Margaret Ann was b in AR abt 1854; brother Samuel was b in TX abt 1857-Have not found them on census for 1850 & 1860.

On the 1870 census for Caldwell, Burleson Co, TX, the children, Margaret & Samuel B, ages 15 & 13, are in the HH of a Mary R CALHOUN, age 34 MS, along with a Mary E HALEY 8 TX; Martha J GEE 20 TX; & James A RUST 43 TN, working as a Clerk. This family is next door to a William GEE 44 TN & his wife Estell L, & ch.

MARY ANN ELIZABETH ADAMS, con't

In the 1880 census for Milam Co, TX- Mary A GEE, age 44 MS, a widow, Father b in KY, Mother in AL.; son Samuel SHELBY 23 TX; son William M GEE 4 TX, Father b TN; & a boarder, Sarah A THOMAS 18 AL.
Daughter Margaret (m 1st ARCHER) had married for a 2nd time to Silas Bowden CLIFTON, by 1876, in Milam Co, TX.

Now, some interesting tidbits about the BRISCOE name: In CKS Collection- The WARREN family- Among the ch of William WARREN & Catherine Anne WILCOX of Lincoln Co, KY. (there were 11 of them) were: John WARREN & Judith Swann BOSWELL-(their dau Maria B, m Isaac SHELBY, Jr son of Gov Isaac SHELBY) & James WARREN & 2nd wife, Pheobe BRISCOE m 20 Feb 1802 in (now) Boyle Co, KY.
James was buried in May 1819 this county, on the Briscoe Farm at Lost Creek. Thomas Buck WARREN.
[ Note elsewhere, the marriage for Thomas BUCK & Sarah SHELBY on 14 Jun 1836, Tippecanoe Co, IN.]

Deed Bk F p402, 19 May 1820, Claiborne Co, MS--Parmenas BRISCOE & Polly his wife of Claiborne Co, MS, sell to Isaac SHELBY late of the State of TN, now of this County & State, a messuage, tract, parcel of land in Claiborne Co, the South fork of Bayou Pierre...Both BRISCOES sign.
Isaac (wife Patsy PRINCE) was the son of Evan (3rd) son of Gov Isaac SHELBY & Catherine SHELBY, dau of Capt John SHELBY & 2nd wife, Sarah DAVIS.
Then, on the LDS program, ANCESTRAL FILE-Show Parmenas' wife was Mary "Polly" MONTGOMERY- They were m 8 Nov 1809, Adams Co, MS- with children & desc's. Wonder if all this ties together in some way?

Winfield Jordan Shelby married Ella Rose Butler on 6/17/31 in Yuma, AZ. She is still living but does not seem to have any information about E.S. Shelby and his family. They had three children: Winfield James Shelby b.12/15/33 Riverside, CA. d.3/4/64 Riverside, CA.
Jerry Oscar Shelby b.10/11/1935 Riverside, CA. d. 3/18/1997, Oregon. Margaret Aylene Shelby.

Lorraine,
Who did Winfield Jordan Shelby marry? I don't have any information other than birth & death. I have never found E.S. Shelby on the census, so I do not know who his parents are. The family of William Shelby b. 1780/90 <N.C.> d. Jan-Aug 1832 ,Dickson Co, Tennesse and Sarah A. King b. 1798 d. 1844,  Johnson Co,  Arkansas were in , Sebastian Co, Arkansas during E.S.'s birth. Lorraine,
I am not a family member from this line, but in my Shelby files I have the following children for Elbert & Lieuisa:
1) Oscar Taylor Shelby b. 4 Jun 1888 Willis Point,Van Zandt Co,Texas
2) Ellen <1891> Texas
3) Sarah 1894 Texas
4) Winfield Jordan Shelby b. 16 Mar 1896, Indian Territory d. 25 Feb 1973 buried Willamette
National Cemetery, Multonah Co, Oregon. I have E.S. dying 7 Aug 1936 & Lieuisa 1 Jan 1897. An interesting sideline is John Turner Shelby was born 4 Mar 1844 Greenwood, Sebastian Co, Arkansas & died 13 Dec 1883 in Willis Point, Van Zandt,Texas. Maybe they are related.
Kathryne

Elbert Sevier SHELBY was born on 5 Mar 1853 in Greenwood, Sebastion Co, AR.  He probably connects in some way to John Turner Shelby..
But Elbert is not on the 1860 census for Delance M Shelby's family when he would have still been a child  He died in 1936 in Sulphur, Murray Co, OK.
He was buried in 1936 in Sulphur, Murray Co, OK.  Buried at Fletcher Cemetery
He may well be a brother, or at least connected to John Turner Shelby, b Greenwood, Sebastion Co, AR, and m in Kaufman Co, TX in 1865 to Martha Martin. John is the ancestor of Darlyn Begin

A correction was made in the 1880 census for Kaufman Co, TX- p154- He's E.S. Shelby, age 25, a widower, in HH of Wm Merriman & wife Narcissa.
Page 183- He's Elbert, age 25 in HH of Wm Merriman & wife Elizabeth-Their marriage record- William Merryman & Narcissus E Kilman or Kellman, 13 Oct 1875, Ellis Co, TX

Lieuisa/Louisa PRICE and Elbert Sevier SHELBY had the following children:

+9 i. Oscar Taylor SHELBY (born on 4 Jun 1888).
10 ii. Ellen SHELBY was born about 1891 in Willis Point, Van Zandt Co, TX.
11 iii. Sarah SHELBY was born about 1894 in Willis Point, Van Zandt Co, TX.
+12 iv. Winfield Jordan SHELBY (born on 16 Mar 1896).

THIRD GENERATION

Who were the parents of Alton SHELBY??

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Alton SHELBY was born about 1834.  He died in Sep 1897 in Hickman Co, TN.  He signed a will on 30 Sep 1897 in Hickman Co, TN.
From Shirley Jones-28 Mar 2001

I discovered extract of LW&T for Alton Shelby, Hickman Co, TN. Names wife M.J. Shelby
Sons: James (Coleman), William, & Samuel
Wife's sons: F.E. Coleman; J.W. Coleman
 Granddaughters: Hauty & Willie Shelby
Signed: Alton (his mark) Shelby
dated 30 Sept 1897

This pretty much confirms that Andrew (Arthur) Nixon Shelby is the son of Alton and Matilda (Skipper) Coleman Shelby...

Absm. Shelby-
This is the name given by the 2nd wife of Arthur Nixon SHELBY, on his death certificate- I wonder if it could be wrong?? And might possibly be
Alton/Alson??
Alton and his wife, Matilda SKIPPER had 10 children- 2 of which were Andrew Nixon SHELBY and Sam SHELBY. Could the name Andrew be wrong??

Note too, that Barbara's father, John Carter, stated that Arthur had a brother Sam- and all of these people were living in Hickman Co, TN.

He was married to Mathilda J SKIPPER.
Matilda S Keffer-
This is the name given as mother of Arthur N, on his death certificate, by his 2nd wife. Wonder if she could be wrong and the name was Matilda SKIPPER???

Barbara stated she had not been able to find anything on KEFFER or Absm, on any record- If the names are wrong, it would explain why.

The data given for this family was provided by Mrs Barbara McCamish, of Muleshoe, TX, April 1997. She is looking for the parents of Absm & Mathilda.

They are on the 1880 census for Maury Co, TN, as Alson b 1834, and Tilda age 29, with their children.

 Kathryne,

That info does help solve one of my mysteries. In Rhodes Cemetery, Dallas Co., TX where Richard Alson Shelby is buried there are two other Shelby's with gravestones:
 Bell Shelby b. 3/17/1871 d. 5/4/1895 w/o R.B.
 Linnie P. Shelby b. 10/11/1893 d. 1/17/1894 d/o A.K. & R.B.
I suspected they were related but didn't know who R.B. was and it now looks like R.B. may have been Reece B. Shelby and he must have returned to TN after his wife died.
Thanks again so much for the leads.    Adele

 Kathryne,
Richard Alson Shelby, b. 1866/1867 TN, d. 1898 in DeSoto, Dallas Co., TX. He's buried in an unmarked grave in Rhodes Cemetery, Dallas Co., TX. Sometime between the 1880 census and 1889 he came to TX and married Delia Etta Love on 2/2/1889 in Dallas Co., TX. Delia was b. 12/15/1870 Bedford Co., TN and d.11/24/1938 in Dallas Co., TX  She was the daughter of Henry L. Love (Maury Co., TN) and Mary Alice Noles (Marshall Co., TN).
The Love's lived near Alson Shelby in Maury Co. so the families may have known each other. Richard (I was told he went by Dick) and Delia had 3 children:
Aubrey Aston b. 1/29/1891 d. 2/1978, Vernie Davis b. 4/13/1892 d. 12/1967, and Linnie Maude b. 3/9/1896 d. 4/1971 all lived and died in Dallas Co., TX.
Adele

Sarah Bethie SMITH was born on 8 Apr 1861 in Rutherford Co, TN.  She died on 16 Mar 1882 in Hickman Co, TN.
From Barbara - Copy of Obit, probably from Bedford Co TN newspaper, since this is where Sarah's parents are buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery,
Bedford Co, TN
The obit for Sarah, gives husband, and her parents names, Sarah's birthdate...She was dedicated to God by holy baptism in infancy, professed religion in the summer of 1872, and immediately after joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in whose Communion she lived an acceptable and consistent member until the day of her death. She was married to her now heart-stricken husband, Dec 26, 1878, in Bedford Co TN; removed with her companion to Hickman Co, TN, where she died March 16, 1882, after an illness of five days; but, thank God, the summons found her ready.
Her seat was always filled at Church, if it was possible, and almost her dying request was that her name should never be stricken from the class-book at Pleasant Valley.
Bethie's departure was quiet and peaceful. Just before she left she heard the angels sing, and joined in with them and sung one verse.
She called for the Bible; it was handed to her. She handed it back, saying she was prepared to go. She left two small children, one of them at her breast; but God will take care of them. Her Grandfather W.M. Shaw.

Andrew (Arthur) Nixon SHELBY and Sarah Bethie SMITH had the following children:

+10 i. Louisa Williamson SHELBY (born on 12 Nov 1880).
+11 ii. Hautie SHELBY (born about Mar 1882).

He was married to Honor Elizabeth --?-- before 1886 in TN?.  Barbara gives this data. Stated that Arthur and Elizabeth were thought to have married before coming to Grayson Co, TX. Their 1st child, Wesley Marvin, was born May 1886 in TX.  Wonder if she could possibly be Honor Elizabeth BROOKS??
Honor Elizabeth --?--was born in Feb 1867 in TN.  She died after 1937 in Gainesville, Cooke Co, TX?.  This is the name given on her husband's death certificate. She was the informant.
I wonder if she might not have gotten Arthur's parents names wrong???

This is totally my own opinion and with question marks- but data is a close enough match to at least make note of it.

Another new (to me) researcher, Mrs Louise Jackson, has provided a lot of data on her ancestors and has opened a new line of SHELBYs I wasn't fully aware of-
The data, provided by Mrs McCamish and Mrs Jackson, differs, but makes me wonder if they are referring to the same people.
Mrs Jackson provided data on Andrew Nixon SHELBY, 27 Nov 1879, Maury Co, TN to Elizabeth BROOKS. Andrew's parents were Alton SHELBY and Matilda SKIPPER.

Could these possibly be all the same people??? Or at least a close connection??

Alton & Matilda lived in Maury Co TN- They had ten children- The census shows [among others] A.N. Shelby, age 11 [1880 cen] and Sam the youngest, aged 9 [more is given on him] Alton died 7 Aug 1898 and is buried at the Sheboss Cemetery in Hickman Co, TN.

There is very strong probably these Shelby's belong to the Abraham & Priscilla SHELBY we have so much data on- who lived in Hickman Co TN and where descendants still live.

7.  Richard "Dick" SHELBY (Alton-1)  was born about 1866 in TN.
1880 cen for Maury Co, TN...age abt 14 with parents  He died in 1898 in DeSoto, Dallas Co, TX.  He was buried in 1898 in DeSoto, Dallas Co, TX.
He's buried in an unmarked grave in Rhodes Cemetery, Dallas Co., TX

Thank you so much. Alson or Alston was my gggrandfather through his son Dick (Richard Alson) and I've been looking for him for years. He was my brick wall. I'm suspecting (hoping) that maybe Alston's father was Vardeman Shelby because they lived in the same area and in the 1840 census Vardeman had two sons that were in the right age range. If he's not Alston's father then I'm stuck again. Dick Shelby came to Texas sometime between the 1880 census and 1889 when he married my ggrandmother in Dallas, TX. He also died in 1898.
Delia Etta LOVE was born on 15 Dec 1870 in Bedford Co, TN. She died on 24 Nov 1938 in Dallas Co, TX.
Richard "Dick" SHELBY and Delia Etta LOVE had the following children:

12 i. Aubrey Aston SHELBY was born on 29 Jan 1891 in TN.  She died in Feb 1978 in Dallas Co, TX.
13 ii. Vernie Davis SHELBY was born on 13 Apr 1892 in TN.  She died in Dec 1967 in Dallas Co, TX.
14 iii. Linnie Maude SHELBY was born on 9 Mar 1896.  She died in Mar 1971 in Dallas Co, TX.

THIRD GENERATION

10.   Louisa Williamson SHELBY (Andrew (Arthur) Nixon-2, Alton-1) was born on 12 Nov 1880 in Centerville, Hickman Co, TN.  She died on 28 Dec 1959 in Seminole, Gaines Co, TX.  Death Certificate- Died Memorial Hospital in Seminole- gives parents names. Buried in Seminole, Morton Cemetery.

She was married to William Irvin CARTER (son of Jesse Stevens CARTER and Sarah A FLOYD) on 1 Aug 1894 in Dallas Co, TX.
Copy of certified copy of marriage record- She's Miss Willie Shelby on this record.  William Irvin CARTER was born on 21 Jan 1871 in Maury Co, TN. He died on 15 Feb 1963.
Louisa Williamson SHELBY and William Irvin CARTER had the following children:

+15 i. John Brown CARTER Jr (born on 28 Dec 1906).

11.  Hautie SHELBY (Andrew (Arthur) Nixon-2, Alton-1) was born about Mar 1882 in Centerville, Hickman Co, TN.  They moved eventually to Okla City, OK, probably between years 1918-1924.

She was married to Gus ANDERSON.

FOURTH GENERATION

15.  John Brown CARTER Jr (Louisa Williamson SHELBY-3, Andrew (Arthur) Nixon-2, Alton-1) was born on 28 Dec 1906 in Denton Co, TX.

He was married to Waweese LINDSEY (daughter of Morgan Conrad LINDSEY and Annie Mae KELLEY).  John stated the 2 girls [Louisa Williamson (Willie); and Hautie] were brought by other family members (unknown) to Texas. They were raised in different homes of relatives. This newspaper article [obit for Sarah Bethie] was kept by my grandmother, Louisa W Shelby Carter. Probably a Bedford Co, TN newspaper since this is where her [Louisa] grandparents are buried.
My [Barbara] dad also said A.N. Shelby had a brother named Sam.  Waweese LINDSEY was born on 8 Apr 1912 in San Saba Co, TX. She died on 17 Mar 1962.
John Brown CARTER Jr and Waweese LINDSEY had the following children:

16 i. Barbara Ann CARTER was born on 4 Sep 1938.  Letter from Mrs Barbara Ann McCamish, Apr 1997- provided the data on this family.

Joshua SHELBY and Susanna______

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Joshua SHELBY was born about 1759 in Washington Co, PA.  He died on 10 Sep 1830 in Bethleham, Union Co, IN.

The official record for the children of Joshua and Susanna can be found in:
Union Co, IN-Circuit Court Sept Term 1831: "Your petitioner, John SHELBY, humbly represents unto your honors, that Joshua Shelby, late of said county of Union, died on or about the 10th day of September, A.D. 1830, siezed and possessed of that ? quarter Section No 25 in Twp fifteen....that the said Joshua Shelby, at the time of his death left Susanna Shelby, his widow, who is entitled to dower in the ? and left the following children and heirs at law. to wit: John Shelby, your petitioner; Jemima Nichols; John Nichols, her husband; Isaac SHELBY, Sally Chunn & Thomas R Chunn, her husb and; Joseph Shelby; David Shelby; Massey Cobb, & Dickerson Cobb, her husband; Lydia Bennett & her husband William BENNETT;
Lydia Bennet  & her husband William H Bennett; Susan Wood & her husband James Wood; and Evan Shelby.."  Joshua is first heard of in September 1776, as a private in a company of VA militia at Fort Liberty under the command of Capt Thomas GADDIS, serving there 61 days.
The location of Fort Liberty is now unknown...(CKS)

Judging from the date of birth of his oldest child, Jemima, April 1781, together with the data given for him in the census of 1810 & 1830 Joshua was probably born in or about 1759.

The next we hear of Joshua was a little over 5 years later, when in Feb 1782, acting as executor for a Joseph COX, he buys & sells land located on both sides of Brown's run at its mouth, or where it empties into the Monongahela River, in what is now German Twp of Fayette Co, PA....(more data)

From Bliss Morton to Charles E Shelby, 2 May 1972-
"Joshua SHELBY, a RW soldier, later resided in Mason Co, KY with is wife, Susanna and their children; that Joshua, wife and family moved about 1818 to Wayne Co, IN (later that section became Union Co, IN) Joshua died there.
Their son Joseph was born in Madison Co & married Elizabeth WILLIAMS, who was born in SC. All their children were born in Union Co, before they moved to Hendricks Co, IN in 1835..."

He was married to Susanna --?-- about 1780 in PA.  Bliss Morton to Charles E Shelby- 1972:  "...Data given on children came from a report by Mrs Robert G Watson, Vincennes, IN...Mrs Watson gives the names and brief data on Joshua's children: [as shown-have not computerized it all]

Charles E Shelby, Coll. - Letter to him, 28 Jan 1970, from Bliss Morton of Indianapolis-
"..My wife [doesn't name her] of 50 yrs passed away some eight yrs ago. We were childless. My wife was not interested in genealogy, but had mentioned the name of her great-grandfather Joseph SHELBY. In my study, I was able to go back one step farther, to Joshua SHELBY.

Joshua was my wife's gr gr-grfather, believed to be a native of Mason Co, KY. I believe that is not correct. Neither do I know the date of his birth.
His oldest son was born in 1789, therefore Joshua SHELBY may have been born about 1765. His wife's name was Susanna... I do not have a list of names of children of Joshua & Susanna, but Joseph was probably oldest, & I believe that John and an Evan also were his sons."

"Union Co, IN Probate Court Records indicate Joshua SHELBY died abt August, 1830, as his estate was settled that year. Items of property were sold at auction and records list names of buyers, among them being Joseph, Evan & John SHELBY (probably his sons). I do not know where he (or his wife) were buried..."

One bright day we picked up her mother and drove about 18 miles east to the old Shelby Farm on Sugar Creek, where she had been born. A main east-west road ran in front of the farm. From it a little used dirt [road] ran north on west side of the creek for years.
The old log house sat there, roof fallen in, dilapidated, grass, weeds, bushes where once was the yard and garden.

About a hundred yards from the house, on banks of creek had been the early burial place for the family, now grown up in tall grass, weeds, briars, and trees, with cattle pasturing around.
Searching among trees, briars and weeds, I found pieces of head-stones. after brushing dirt off them we were able to read inscriptions:

"One of the grand old pioneers, was born in IN in 1815, son of Joshua SHELBY. The family came to Buck Creek Twp, Hancock Co in 1834. The elder Joshua died in 1839.
Joshua Jr, was married to Nancy DUNN in 1839. She is the dau of Abner DUNN, an early citizan of the same locality.

Joshua, whose name heads this sketch, was elected Sheriff of Hancock Co in 1852 as a democrat but only served a few months. He served as Justice & Trustee for Buck Creek for several years. he was an honest man & well calculated for a pioneer life, caring little for superfluities of to-day. The following are the names of his children: Catherine E; Samuel N; Sarah; Lydia; Elvira; John F."

I am glad to give this family a sketch in the "Pioneer" Mr SHELBY died, I think, in 1884

He was married to Nancy DUNN on 26 Dec 1839 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN.  According to Bliss Morton-his wife's ancestor-  Nancy DUNN was born on 4 Oct 1813 in SC.  From Old Southern Bible Records, by Lister-Gen Publ Co 1974- Bible of Samuel DUNN  She died on 11 May 1889 in Union Co, IN.

I'm sure you saw my old posting from Crown Hill Cemetery the other day.

It appears that he died in 1893, not 1899 as you stated. According to Kathryne, he died 1 month before he was buried in Crown Hill.

Thank you for your inquiry. Our records do indicate that he was interred on February 23, 1893. The purchase of property was made on February 21, 1893.
Perhaps you could contact the Marion County Health Department to obtain a death certificate. Or are you certain that the Hampton Shelby that you're inquiring about is the same Mr. Shelby interred here at Crown Hill? If you would like you may also submit a genealogy request through our website.
Our geneologist will find as much information as possible and respond to you through the mail. Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Thank you for the information. This is very helpful. The Crown Hill Cemetery searchable database http://www.crownhill.org/cgi-local/db_search.cgi, indicates that Hampton was buried 22 Feb 1893, six years before he "died". Is there any possibility that he died in 1893, or is the cemetery database wrong?

Bliss Morton states ".. Hampton was one year old when family moved to Hancock Co, IN. He was but eleven when his father died. As he grew up he was the last of children to remain with widowed mother; and he continued on the Sugar Creek farm after his marriage to Mary Anna Brizendine, 23 Feb 1856.
He and wife moved to Indianapolis about 1889, where he was injured in a railroad yard and died 23 Jan 1899. His wife died 14 Aug 1909; both are buried in Crown Hill Cem, Indianapolis.

Note may be taken of his given names. His mother was from South Carolina, and perhaps instisted on naming her last baby for well-known Carolinians, "Hampton and Brown"...they had 7 ch"

Anita,
Wow! a great sight--thanks. I can't verify Hampton B. Shelby's death date-sorry. I can see that Hampton's nephew George W. Shelby and George's wife Augusta Nash are also buried at this sight. Thanks for your help. It also looks like Martha Josephine's first husband Andrew Edward Drischel is also buried there. Did you notice the strange spelling on Martha's burial record? Maybe the person giving the information didn't know the correct spelling.

I know how much work that must have been. I am searching the Brizendines. All I am interested in is the information about Hampton and Mary Ann(a) and their descendants.

Anita,
I looked in ,Marion Co, Indiana deaths and it had Shelby, H. Male White 58yrs. Jan 23, 1893 Indianapolis, Marion Co, Indiana. Maybe he died and was reburied alongside his wife or maybe not. Maybe this H. Shelby is a different person. You have me stumped.
By the way I also looked in , Marion Co, Indiana marriages and Augusta Nash was not a Nash but a Moesch (I think the typing was very old and the film wasn't picking up on it. All the letters that were an o,e,c looked the same. George W. married Augusta Moesch May 1, 1892 , Marion Co, Indiana.

I found the "Shelby Exchange" on the Internet. I am working on a line of Shelby's in Mississippi. My GGGGrandfather was Samuel Shelby, married to Lavinia Meadows. He was born approx. 1799 in Tippah Co., MS. One of his sons was Alfred Shelby, married to Malinda Jane Hopkins.
Their son was Sam Houston Shelby, married to Florence Duncan. As far as I can tell, the family stayed in Tippah Co. for all of those generations.
Do you have anything on this branch of the Shelby's? Any help would be appreciated!!
 Margaret Clausen

Were your Samuel and Lavinia/Viney ever in Sumpter Co, AL?? 1836 time frame? There was a Samuel & Viney Shelby there.

Samuel Shelby (parentage unknown) & (1st wife) Lavinia had a daughter Mary Matilda Shelby b 24 Dec 1824; married c1840 to Joel Johnson Meadows.
Samuel & (2nd wife) Hannah Stewart had a daughter Mary Jane Shelby, who married Sampson Meadows, 4th child & 3rd son of her half sister, Mary Matilda [That's what my notes say, anyway]

Hannah Stewart had married 1st to William Lassley & had several children

Alfred's (b c1838 TN) wife Malinda (b c1837) died 14 Jan 1914. They had 6 children- one of which was your Samuel.
The data came from Mrs J. J. Meadows- Mary Matilda Shelby was her husband's grandmother.. [said name had been Meador]...and no, do not at this point know who the first Samuel belongs to.. :-(   Researchers have been looking for a long time

Something I should have picked up on from your first message-
The first 'fault' here is, Samuel was not born in Tippah Co, MS, nor could they have been married there -Probably TN, as their dau Mary was born there 24 Dec 1824, county not mentioned....Mississippi didn't become a State until late 1817, and Tippah did not become a county until 1836, and it was taken from the Chickasaw Cession before this date...

Also...Sumpter Co, AL needs a closer look..As mentioned there was a Samuel and Viney Shelby there in 1840 census. Sumpter became a county in 1832, and was also taken out of the same Chickasaw Cession...

Adding to the confusion...1850 census for Tippah, says he's age 55 b TN. The 1860 census for Tippah Co, MS says Samuel, age 66, was born in SC

Hello again Judith:
We know that this Evan Shelby descended from Rees & Mary Shelby. There is a deed from Cumberland Co., PA, that proves it since it mentions Evan as their "son."

I have not found any such documentation for the children of Evan Shelby and his first wife, Charity. The Johnson book of 1994 lists six issue but mentions that the proof and order of birth is "uncertain" and that the data is from "CKS" or Cass Knight Shelby.

Can you share with me what data or documentation CKS may have had that suggested the names of this Evan Shelby's children?  Is there a family Bible somewhere?

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to render.

CKS letter to M. M. Wilkinson of Shelby, MS [no date-probably 1940s- I did not photocopy]:
Cass stated he had spent many years collecting Shelby’s and “in 1926 started in earnest to consult original and authentic sources, having found that most of the printed matter in our libraries was hardly worth the paper it was printed on. By now I believe I have seen nearly every if not every public record in PA, MD, VA and have been sent copies of many in TN, KY and the Carolina’s”

CKS letter to Grace Shelby, 19 Jan 1954: [did not photocopy]
“Can supply first 3 generations, but, since my knowledge of the next four down to the present is rather fragmentary”

My added note- Judy – I gather from Cass’ letter’s he had stopped his own research by 1954 and was working to put his records in order for future generations, as he was loosing his eyesight to cataracts. He extracted the data he thought was important from all his correspondence and documents, placing the data under each individual – After doing that he may have pitched the originals- but that is guess work on my part- I just know there were no originals of any kind in what I went through.
His collection of glass negatives numbering probably near 200 or more, in pristine condition, all labeled and organized, are located in the photo department in the Filson Club Library. Which is the bases of my thinking that Cass pitched all his originals after they were typed, knowing no family member wanted them. I mean, if they went so far as getting rid of all the family photos, they certainly wouldn’t be interested in keeping his research papers.

Well, there were a few letters which were bound in such a way I couldn’t copy them-the only original items that were there-some letters written by Cass’ father. So I figured if the family didn’t want these or the negatives, no telling what may have just been dumped…

CKS letter to “My dear Cousin” [Mrs Frank L Moss of Paris, IL; 2 August 1950]:
“…We have no account of Evan’s private life in the Cove, or even the names of his first wife and their children. It is not reasonable to think, however, that he would remain on and work a large farm for three decades if he had no family. As a matter of fact, a township census taken in 1784 credits him with a dwelling and “10 whites,” indicating quite a large one. And yet, there is no record that I can find that names them, or says what became of them. On the other hand, there were six or seven younger persons living in southwest Penn’a. at that period, whose parentage is not of record and whose numerous descendants have no knowledge on the subject. It is but natural to suppose, is it not, that these “orphans” were the offspring of Evan Shelby of Bedford and Greene and grandchildren of Rees? For your information and to complete the picture, they were:
    (a)  Evan Shelby, who was a private soldier and ranger of the frontier betw. 1778-83, Bedford Co., Pa. Later we find an unidentified Evan at Maysville, Ky., associated with Matthew Campbell. It is my belief that both Evans were one and the same person and the son of Ensign and Capt. Evan of Bedford.
    (b)  Eli Shelby, a frontier ranger, 1778-83, , in S.W. Penn’a. Nothing more about him. He could have been either a son of David Shelby of Dunkard who d. young, or a son of Evan of Bedford and Greene.
    (c)  George Shelby, who lived in Fayette Co. and was a soldier in the War of 1812.
    (d)  Joshua Shelby, b. abt. 1759-60, lvd. Fayette Co. across the Monongahela from your David, but abt. 1793 moved to Maysville, Ky., where he lvd. For twenty-seven years and was associated there with the Campbells. In 1820 he remvd. To Wayne County, Indiana, where he d. 1830. Had ten children, one of whom was David Shelby, b. Pa. abt. 1784 and m. Jane McCoffery of Mason Co, Ky., then 2d. Jemima E. Walker in 1840. he had mvd. To Champaign Co., Ohio as early as 1827. It is he who I think was the “Cousin David” your grandmother referred to in her “diary,” since he was the only one of that name who fits in there.
   (e)  (a female) Shelby, who mar. Jeremiah Williams.
   (f)  Mary Shelby, who mar. Matthew Campbell of Brownsville, Pa. and Maysville, Ky. And had a son Evan Campbell. This Matthew and Evan Shelby of Maysville were of the first boatload of settlers to go to Cincinnati in 1788-9. Your David’s son Benjamin of Pickaway Co., Ohio, had a son Evan Campbell Shelby.  And lastly, we have your
   (g)  David Shelby, (the younger), who was born in 1765, which makes it perfectly possible, so far as dates go, for him to have been a son of Evan and his first wife of Bedford Co., Pa., and hence of the fourth, not the third generation.
The third generation came into being between 1748 and 1780; the fourth, those whose parents we know about, that is, began to arrive about 1773; but, since Rees and his son Ensign Evan, seem to have married at ages earlier than the others, it is not out of line for the latter’s children to have been born somewhat earlier and thus spanned the time or periods of two generations. That often happens in other “families” for the same reason…Your David himself, married at the age of seventeen, you remember. Enoch Williams, the father of Mary, who married David, also lived in the Little Cove and thus produced the necessary propinquity to bring about that event.
…It seems strange that of all the very numerous descendants of this Evan Shelby who are now living, we cannot seem to find one who knows something about him; he’s really worth claiming….
   Very sincerely, Cass K. Shelby

In other letters in this same time frame Cass stated “There isn’t a scratch of the pen telling us who Evan Shelby’s first wife was, or the names of their issue. And yet he would not have gone on cultivating a 300 acre farm for nearly thirty years and even adding to it, if he hadn’t a family. In short, the Bedford County, Penn’a., tax lists (The Little Cove was in Bedford before it was transferred to Franklin) for 1784 assessed him for a dwelling and #10 whites”, showing that his family was quite a large one.  Looking elsewhere for his children we find that there were several younger Shelbys living for a time at a somewhat later period in southwest Pennsylvania, whose parentage is now unknown. Among them were your David of Laurel Pint and a Joshua Shelby, who seems slightly older, who lived on the east side of the Monongahela in Fayette County and later migrated to Mason County, Kentucky, and still later of near Richmond, Indiana. I can show conclusively that these “orphans” were not from either of the immigrant’s sons, Capt. Evan, Jr., John, or Moses, who migrated south; they were not of his son, the older David of S.W. Penn’a. and Missouri and the only one then that they could have sprung from was the son Rees, through Rees’s son Evan.. I can give you detailed evidence tending to support this opinion, though it is not absolute proof…”

Evan Shelby….. born probably 1739/40. On May 7, 1759 he was commissioned an ensign in Pa.Regiment (Pa. archives, Fifth Series, Vol. I, pages 300, 312.
On Dec. 10, 1760 his father gave him the Little Cove farm. This valley was attached to the new County of Bedford in 1771 as a part of its Ayr Twp. And Evan was chosen tax assessor on Oct. 1, 1773 (the Bedford Co. Pa. Quart. Sessions Docket No. I page 58)
In the Revolution he was commissioned Capt. 1777, Bedford troops. (Pa. Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. IV, 250, Vol. V, page 71)

Mary Shelby…. Letters, Paul Wisenall, c/o Inland Oil Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, to CKS – Excerpts:
Oct 17 and 26, 1894. “ I am a direct descendant of Matthew Campbell of Maysville (formally Limestone or Washington), Kentucky. He was my maternal great-great-grandfather. Family tradition says that Matthew Campbell married  a Shelby and I am trying to find out her name and the name of her father with proof. One of the older members of the Campbell family informed me positively that she had often heard her father speak of his “Uncle Evan Shelby.”  Thus:
   Matthew Campbell = ? Shelby
       Evan Campbell <brothers>     John Campbell
John B Campbell    Julia Campbell (my informant)
     Jane E Campbell
  Paul Wisenall
I cannot give you the date of Mathew’s birth. The record in the oldest family Bible that I have found simply states that he died in 1819, tradition saying that he was then a very old man.

On February 14, 1928, I [CKS], I called on Paul Wisenall at his office, 819 First National Bank Buildg., Cincinnati (He was then official reporter for the U.S. Court of the Eastern District of Kentucky), who took me over to his home, 2222 Eastern Avenue, Covington, KY, where he showed me some copies of old Bible records he had made. They are reproduced herewith – C.K.S.
Matthew Campbell, father of Evan Campbell, departed this life Jany. 18, 1819.
Evan Campbell, born Apr. 2, 1780, died Dec. 20, 1859.
Evan Campbell and Mary Byers were married May 10, 1803, in the 16th year of her age.
Margaret Campbell, born June 2, 1787, died May 13, 1849, in the 62nd year of her age. Sister Campbell was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
[Among a long list of other names – Shelby Campbell, born Apr 9, 1809, married Mary Chambers of Mayville, KY – I’ll supply the rest if you need them – Judy]

Letters, Anna Delia (Mrs. W. L.) Yellman, 831 Twenty Third Street, Rock Island, Illinois, to C.K.Shelby; excerpts:
July 5, 1927. “I am trying to locate a Shelby great-grandmother. My father’s grandmother was Mary (Shelby) Campbell, said to have been a daughter of Evan Shelby. She married Mathew(sic) Campbell and they lived at Aberdeen [Brown Co.] Ohio, and Limestone (Maysville), Kentucky, where Mathew died, January 18, 1819, and was buried at Aberdeen (across the river). Mary and Mathew’s children were Evan Shelby, John, Malinda, Levisa Jane (who was my grandmother).
Mathew Campbell and his wife Mary were on their way to New Orleans, La, when she died of yellow fever and was buried on an island near Vicksburg, Miss., known by river men for many years thereafter as “My wife’s Island,” but later called Paw Paw Island. Mathew is aid to have come from Redstone [Brownsville, Pa], but formerly from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Draper’s Notes say that a James Campbell was killed by Indians at Limestone. He was a brother of Mathew, both being sons of James Campbell. Have you any data which will help me place this Mary Shelby? Her daughter, Levica Jane, was born in 1794, died in 1873 and was buried at Aberdeen, Ohio.
They had land there and my mother’s father, Dr Thomas Miles Moore, bought this land in 1832; on it was a house called “Traveler’s Rest.” My grandfather moved part of it, but left one room and a chimney standing in the field until twenty years ago. My father died when I was five years old. He was one of the younger children.
All I know of the family is wehat cousins have written me, two of them now being ninety years old. I imagine my father was born in 1828. I am a child of his second marriage, which accounts for my ignorance of our ancestry..
Dec 1, 1927. My Power line (running back):

2. Hugh Power; b 1828, mar. 2nd, Martha E. (b. 1841, dau. Of Dr. T.M. Moore, 1809-1895, and wife Ann Delia Harris, 1809-1886; she d. 1921), died 1878, son of
3. James Power (1788-1833) and wife Levis Jane Campbell (1794-1873), who was the daughter of
4. Mathew Campbell (d 1819), son of James Campbell.

Letters, Nannie Power (Mrs Charles Carroll) Brown, 805 Cliff Avenue, Spokane, Washington, to C.K.Shelby:
    Dec 28, 1927. Refers to Matthew Campbell as her great-grandfather, who married a Shelby by the name of Mary, whose father was an Evan Shelby, and goes on to say that Matthew and Mary named their first child Evan Shelby Campbell b. April 2, 1780. {CKS noted –Bible has no middle name}
Just where Matthew and Mary were married I do not know; he inlisted(sic) at Brownstone, Pa. in 1778. Matthew Campbell came to Kentucky in 1787. My grandmother, Levica Jane Campbell, was born at Limestone, now Maysville, in April, 1794. She married James Power, son of Hugh and Sarah (Dyes) Power, in 1810. Evan Shelby and Matthew Campbell were always associated together, going to Kentucky about the same time… My father was Capt. James Campbell Power, builder and owner of steamboats on the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Mrs Yellman’s father and my father were brothers…
…Matthew Campbell; d. Jan 18, 1819, mar. Mary, bur. At “The Narrows,” Aberdeen, Ohio…
Matthew built a large stone house at the beginning of the old Indian trail at Aberdeen about 1790. It was used as an inn and a fort…
